[Halloween Series; Week 1: Ladies of Horror] [Ofelia from Pan’s Labyrinth (2006); played by Ivana Baquero]
There is no one on this list quite so innocent and kind as Ofelia from Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy horror fairytale, Pan’s Labyrinth. When her mother remarries a brutal Falangist Captain, she resolves herself to protect her mother and her soon-to-be-born baby brother. Facing all-too real evils, she becomes entwined in a fantastical world of faeries and fauns, who say she is their lost Princess, and must accomplish tasks to regain her immortality and her kingdom. With childlike wonder and a desire more than anything to get her family somewhere safe and away from the horrors of their lives, she agrees, and embarks on a journey filled with dark magic. But the supernatural cannot compare with the terror of her stepfather, and Ofelia is tested at every turn. Compassionate, intelligent, curious, and righteous, Ofelia is a pure soul who we want to believe in, just as she believes in the Faun.
